While many of us are quick to grab a cream or ointment in our haste to make acne go away, there are treatments available that many people are not aware of. Skincare-News.com’s latest article, “Growing Pains: Acne” discusses a host of new treatments to help alleviate the appearance of acne, including supplements. http://www.skincare-news.com/articles.php?ArtID=477
It’s no secret that taking a multi-vitamin on a daily basis is good for the entire body, but there are acne-specific vitamins and minerals that can be taken to help clear the skin of blemishes as well. They are not miracle cures for acne and they need to be taken with care and caution. Always consult with a doctor before beginning to take any supplement.
There are many dietary supplements that may help strengthen and protect the skin from the bacteria that cause acne, but a few of the most effective are: vitamins A, C, E, biotin, zinc and silicon. Not only can each of these supplements be taken individually to help with acne, they can also be combined for a synergistic affect.
Vitamin A supports new cell growth and also helps regulate sebum production in the skin. When too much sebum is present on the skin, it can mix with dead skin cells, dirt and oil, creating a perfect breeding ground for blemishes or acne.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), found in oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes is another acne buster that is easy to add into the diet. Ascorbic acid is required for tissue growth and healthy gums, aids in reducing levels of harmful cholesterol, and improves the texture and clarity of the skin by boosting collagen production, both when ingested and applied topically.
Vitamin E, another major anti-oxidant which helps combat acne, is also a super-potent scavenger of free radicals. In the body, Vitamin E protects cells from lipid oxidization and supports healthy cholesterol levels.
Biotin, a B vitamin, is also necessary for healthy hair and skin, and aids in cell growth and fatty acid production. Many skincare companies are savvy to the benefits of this vitamin, as well, and it is popping up in skincare products and blemish treatments alike.
Minerals are also important supplements to include in an acne-blasting skincare diet, especially zinc and silicon. An essential mineral, zinc is needed for protein synthesis and collagen production and it helps speed the healing of wounds and boosts the immune system.
Silicon is also a defender of clear and glowing skin. Often seen in skincare products as silica, silicon is the one of the most abundant elements on the planet (second only to oxygen) and is needed for the formation of collagen, and to maintain healthy hair, skin and nails.

Many people think of facials as an unnecessary or even extravagant luxury, but in actuality, regular facials are an important step in a healthy skin care routine. A facial is much more than pampering; it gives one the opportunity to spend an hour with a skin specialist who will not only help cleanse and rejuvenate the skin, but can also treat specific skin concerns like acne, dryness and aging skin. So whether someone is looking at facials as a gift for a sister or boyfriend or as a stress-relieving necessity for themself during the busy holiday season, a little research is all it takes to help book the perfect facial. Enjoy!
Part I took a detailed look at preparing for a chemical peel; now get a better understanding about the actual treatment and recovery. After getting a peel, the skin will most likely be red or frosty and feel very tight. This doesn’t mean it’s been burned. The first layer has been exfoliated using an acid that eats up dry and dead skin and kills bacteria. Overall, there are many objectives of a chemical peel, the acids are very different and all are highly effective: As skin peels and new layers become visible, take a close look at how healthy and fresh the texture of the skin looks and feels. Peels leave skin tighter, younger looking and softer.
Think women are the only ones who care about their skin? Think again. The advent of men’s skincare lines, bursting onto the beauty world within the last 10 years, continues to grow in popularity today. Men no longer limit their routines to soap and shaving cream; instead, men are embracing toners, moisturizers, manicures, facials and even plastic surgery. Spas are also cluing in, offering treatments specifically suited to men’s skincare needs, so it should be no surprise that men are also taking the next step by embracing age-reversal procedures, such as Botox cosmetic or micro-dermabrasion, as well.
Professionals from medical doctors to plumbers to artists all rely upon a basic set of tools to practice their craft: from a stethoscope, to paint brushes, to a hammer. But basic tools are not just for doctors or artists; the tool kit can be modified to include skincare basics. And regardless of skin type, there are a few key items that should be in every skincare ‘black bag’, starting with the basics.
Most people have seen the rows and rows of products on the shelves intended specifically for sensitive skin, and probably spent hours browsing, trying to find the best ones. But many are unaware about the importance of paying attention to clothing, jewelry, and lifestyle changes as well. For those with sensitive skin, just about anything can be a possible trigger.

There is a growing interest in the relationship between food and health as more and more consumers reach for organic foods and foods made without chemicals, hormones and additives. Motivational speaker and specialty cookbook author Lisa A. Lundy makes available for the first time to the public a document aptly titled “Could Food Be Making You Sick and Tired?” which you can now download free from her website http://www.TheSuperAllergyCookbook.com. The document is an excellent primer addressing why there is such an explosion in the gluten-free diet, the value that the Feingold Association (http://www.Feingold.org) offers to people who want to be healthy, as well as the prevalence of celiac disease and other health conditions that are often helped by a change in diet including autism, ADD, ADHD, gastrointestinal issues, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel, behavioral, emotional and learning issues in children, allergies, depression and anxiety for starters.
Once source for people feeling sick or tired can be undiagnosed celiac disease. According to the University of Chicago’s Celiac Disease Program, just over 3 million Americans have celiac disease, yet 97 percent of the people with celiac disease are undiagnosed. Celiac disease is more common than several other diseases that have become “household” words such as epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, Parkinson’s disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can affect both children and adults. In people with an active case of celiac disease, eating gluten, an amino acid sequence found in wheat, barley, rye, some oats and other grains containing gluten, triggers the body’s immune response and can damage or destroy the villi in the small intestine. While there is no cure for celiac disease, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is the recommended treatment. Undiagnosed and untreated celiac disease increases the risk of cancer by 200-300% according to a fact sheet produced by the Celiac Sprue Association USA, Inc., a non-profit consumer organization dedicated to supporting individuals with celiac disease has a website with information and resources on the topic: http://www.CSACeliacs.org
“More and more Americans are reaching for organic foods and foods made without additives, preservatives and food dyes because consumers are realizing that food can have a big impact on how they feel. U.S. food manufacturers are reacting to consumer demand and preferences by removing additives,” Lundy stated. “It is an exciting time for consumers as we now see some of the major food producers on TV promoting the fact that their food is either organic or made without hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or additives” Lundy said.
Lundy is the author of The Super Allergy Girl™ Allergy & Celiac Cookbook (From A Mother Who Knows™), a gluten-free, casein-free, dairy-free, egg-free, peanut and tree-nut free and other allergen-free resource for both the beginner and experienced baker. She has more than a decade of experience with food allergies and celiac disease and has taught gluten-free baking classes in the Western New York community for many years.
